2018-2019 School Goals
Goal: Increase Academic Achievement
At New Academy Charter School we have set several school goals for the 2018-2019 school year. One of our goals is to increase Academic Achievement for all students in the areas of Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Calculation, and Writing. Upon a student’s enrollment, they meet with our Reading Specialist, Mrs. LaPalme-Wilson, to complete NINE different screener assessments that calculate a baseline in reading, writing, and math. So far this school year, Mrs. LaPalme-Wilson has administered 1131 screeners! These screeners can indicated a student’s academic grade equivalency as well as indications of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Students are also given a NEEDS BASED ASSESSMENT that will help to link them with different resources that may be needed.
Goal: Increase Attendance
Another goal for the 2018-2019 school year is to improve student attendance. This goal was set in place to help our students combat truancy issues which will also help increase their overall academic success. Below is a graph of our ongoing attendance trend.
What are we doing to increase attendance, you ask? Veteran staff member Melissa Miller has taken on a new role as our Attendance Officer. Ms. Miller takes this task very seriously and she has set up a system that rewards small and large attendance improvement as well as individual relationships with families of students who are struggling to attend. Rewards include Friday dress-down’s, special breakfasts and lunches, raffle tickets for gift cards and New Academy Charter School gear and clothing, and school-wide activity days.
During the month of September, New Academy Charter School had 5 students with PERFECT attendance. These students are Keshaun Cutler, Dashawn Wallace, Dashaun Dorsett, Nico Murrell, and Keefe Seely. These students received a special lunch as well as a chance to win a gift card to Foot Locker.
Other Attendance award winners include:
1 absence: Pierre Diggs, Steven Gonsar, Geneva Gross, Abshir Haji, Dai’Onna Lowry, Brian Noel, Amir Pendleton, La’Khya Thomas, Mariah Tillman, and Diontae Ware
2 absences: Brian Cruz-Lope, Corday Davis, Ty’Zachary Diggs, Jacob Frederick, Kaniya Martin, Jaelyn Nowlin, Jaylon Reeves, Tyler Wade, Keimar Wallace, Raekwon Watson, Malik Wells, and Kwanasha Williams
3 absences: Diona Hawk, Felicia Johnson, Alexius Payne, Luke Thomas, Scott Sines, Allen Washington.
On October 18th, New Academy Charter School held the first school-wide activity day to celebrate meeting our September Attendance Goal. All students had the opportunity to dress-down, play carnival games, paint pumpkins, watch scary movies, and enjoy a cook-out for lunch. This fun-filled day was a complete success and students and staff had a great time!

Check out the Garden Kick-Off!
On October 2nd, New Academy Charter School held their Garden Kick-Off with Grow Pittsburgh and it was a great success. The students and teachers spent the day filling the garden beds with soil and planted seeds. Lettuce, peas, radishes, arugula, and herbs were planted and we anticipate a fall harvest within a few weeks!
Blessings in a Backpack
The Finance & Corp Treasury Technology team BNY Mellon presented a donation of 4,610 bulk items to our school as part of the Blessings in a Backpack program. This program works to ensure that youth don’t go hungry on the weekends. Thank you to the entire team for your contributions! We are very grateful to be selected to receive this donation on behalf of our students!
Corporate Volunteers at New Academy Charter School
On October 12th volunteers from Bayer Corporation volunteered their time to help beautify the school. Several volunteers with artistic abilities painted the seating in the courtyard. BNY Mellon also volunteered and they helped by emptying a room in preparation of a new fitness center as well as helping organize our student uniforms into what will soon be our School Store. Look at what an AMAZING job they did! New Academy Charter School is now a brighter place to be!
Over the course of the school year, numerous studentsl will be attending Student Service Projects with Holly Turkovic, the Climate and Culture Coach. For the majority of the school year, once a week student volunteers spend their time giving back to the community. Places that they serve include Horses with Hope, World Vision, Intersection Soup Kitchen, Good Samaritan Food Pantry, the Toys for Tots warehouse, and many more non-profit organizations. We are proud to take our students into the community to give back where we can.
