Drawing on over 25 years of experience working with delinquent students, The Academy is now home to a charter school for the Pittsburgh Public School’s students on probation from the Allegheny County Juvenile Courts.
These students’ prior educational experiences had been ridden with chronic truancy, frequent suspensions, disruptive behavior, and poor grades. The Academy’s unique and specialized curriculum offers this specialized group of students the proper attention and counseling that they require for success in the classroom.
Students enrolled in the charter school, which serves grades 8-12, participate in a full day of classes that consists of core subjects and electives. Upon arriving at The Academy, students eat a full breakfast and break for a full lunch in the middle of the day. All meals are prepared by a certified chef and are free to our students.
The credits which our students earn will transfer equally back to their local high school. If they successfully complete their credit requirements at The Academy Charter School, the students will graduate with a high school degree and receive a $2,000 college scholarship.
Our charter school students are directly picked up from and dropped off to their homes. Transportation is also provided to families for an orientation and dinner at the beginning of the year and all subsequent family and parent events. Open-house evenings follow each grading period. We believe that parent involvement is crucial and have implemented a unique family counseling service. Each student is assigned a family advocate who visits the families at home to update them on the student’s school progress and behavior.
